Jackie
Chan kicked some serious girlie ass at the box office this weekend.
|
According to box office estimates, Rush
Hour, the martial arts flick combining the adrenaline of the slick-moving
Asian star Chan and the slick-talking American comedian Chris
Tucker, earned a record $31 million.
The industry was surprised by this movie's huge gross, the first time Chan, a major star overseas, has really scored big in America. It set the record for an opening weekend in September--an often lackluster period following the end of summer and prior to the winter holiday season.
"I think no one expected this number, including us," said New Line Cinema's marketing and distribution president, Mitch Goldman, of his studio's Rush Hour.
Chan and company completely crushed the debut of One True Thing, the melodrama starring Meryl Streep as a cancer stricken mother and Ren?e Zellweger as her emotionally conflicted daughter. The film earned just $6.6 million.
Last week's No. 1, the gambling drama Rounders, dropped to fourth place, behind summer smash There's Something About Mary. Saving Private Ryan and Armageddon also continued to have Top 10 appeal.
