Lili Taylor tapped for 'Haunting' remake

NEW YORK (Variety) - Indie film queen Lili Taylor is in talks to play the lead role in a studio feature for the first time, a remake of ``The Haunting of Hill House.''

DreamWorks is tentatively planning to release the film, based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, at Christmas 1999. Jan De Bont (``Speed'') will direct.

The original 1963 feature, titled ``The Haunting,'' was directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn. The picture tells the story of a group of people who gather in an old house to determine whether a ghost is inside.

Currently on screens as an avaricious art dealer in John Waters' ``Pecker,'' Taylor is a mainstay of independent films. In 1995, the Sundance Film Festival awarded her its first special grand jury prize for her work in ``Girls Town,'' ``Cold Fever'' and ``I Shot Andy Warhol,'' in which she played would-be assassin Valerie Solanas.

Taylor's other film credits include ``Ransom,'' ``Household Saints,'' ``Illtown,'' ``Short Cuts'' and ``Mystic Pizza.'' She will next appear in ``The Impostors,'' a screwball comedy directed by and starring Stanley Tucci of ``Big Night'' fame.
